Tom Shanahan Named Recipient of Ray Hall Spirit of ERA Award
The Electronics Representatives Association (ERA) has announced that Thomas J. Shanahan, the association’s recently retired CEO, is the most recent recipient of the Ray Hall Spirit of ERA Award.
Shanahan was nominated for the award by ERA Chairman of the Board Paul Nielsen CPMR, of Brainard-Nielsen Marketing, Inc., the recipient of this award in 2008. Nielsen noted, “We had to keep the lid on this news until our new CEO, Walter Tobin, and I had the opportunity to present the award to Tom in person in February.”
About his nomination, Nielsen adds, “Some people can’t resist a challenge. They run toward the problem. When faced with a dilemma, they embrace it. That’s what Tom did for ERA when he took the reins (at no pay!) as our CEO in 2006 after many years as our COO and volunteer legal advisor. While he won’t take credit for it, Tom stabilized ERA’s finances at a time of declining membership, stopped the membership plunge, kept a talented staff in place and guided us through a period of turmoil. He also represented ERA through many industry changes, including with EDS and ECIA. The bottom line is that Tom’s selfless work on behalf of ERA has not only helped us survive but has enabled us to hire a new CEO to drive growth and secure ERA’s future. “Thank you, Tom!”
Commenting about the award, named for his good friend of many decades, Shanahan said, “Ray will probably get a big kick out of the fact that I’ve received this award, but this belongs more to the ERA staff rather than to me individually. What a pleasure it was to work with all the staff members through the years. They are consummate professionals who never say ’no’ when asked to do anything and everything for ERA.”
The Ray Hall Spirit of ERA Award was established in 2004 to honor the now-retired CEO who had served ERA for more than 40 years. Hall asked that the award recognize individuals who exemplify the spirit of ERA through their commitment to serving and advancing the professional field sales (manufacturers’ representative) function.
