Monthly POS Reports
Budde Marketing, which provides monthly POS Index reports to ERA members, issued its latest summary, running from January 2019 through February 2021. Visit era.org to view the new index. According to the new report, February 2021 POS activity was ahead of February 2020 by 6 percent; however, it was 6 percent below the January 2019 index. Despite a great degree of uncertainty about what 2021 holds, February 2021 POS Index indicates a good month as a comparative to other months. Chip shortages are expected to last into 2023, especially for chips used by automakers, even as companies commit to expand chipmaking capacity. Read more at FierceElectronics.
Global IT spending is projected to total $4.1 trillion in 2021, up 8.4 percent from last year. All IT spending segments are forecast to have positive growth through 2022 with the highest growth coming from devices (14 percent) and enterprise software (10.8 percent) as organizations shift their focus to providing a more comfortable, innovative and productive environment for their workforce. Total semiconductor unit shipments are forecast to rise 13 percent in 2021, to 1,135.3 billion. The 13 percent increase in semiconductor shipments, which include integrated circuits as well as optoelectronics, sensor/actuator, and discrete (O-S-D) devices, follows a 3 percent increase in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic was wreaking havoc across many segments of the economy. Fueled by stimulus payments and pent-up demand, consumer spending at retailers jumped 9.8 percent in March, the largest monthly gain in 10 months. Excluding gasoline and motor vehicle sales, retail spending rose 8.2 percent in March. Read more at APNews.

An audio recording of the April 13 Water Cooler session, “Cybersecurity — How to Keep Your Company Safe in an Unsafe World,” is now available on the ERA website. This session was facilitated by Walter Tobin, ERA CEO, and co-facilitators Bob Kill, President and CEO of Enterprise Minnesota; John Connelly, Vice President of Consulting for Enterprise Minnesota; and Scott Singer, President of CyberNINES.
