Manufacturing Data Reports

Manufacturing data reports from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) are released on or about the first of every month and can be accessed at ISM. The Jan. 3 report says economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in December, and the overall economy grew for the 128th consecutive month. Also, of the 18 manufacturing industries included in the report, the computer and electronic products sector was one of three reporting growth in December.

The global IoT device management market is anticipated to reach $5.1 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 28.3 percent, according to Grand View Research. Growing demand for IoT services, the need for digitalization, and increasing penetration of communication and networking technologies are expected to drive the market over the coming years. North America-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $2.12 billion in billings worldwide in November 2019 (three-month average basis), according to SEMI. The billings figure is 1.9 percent higher than the final October 2019 level of $2.08 billion and 9.1 percent higher than the November 2018 billings level of $1.94 billion. Read more at EPSNews.

Despite sluggish sales at physical stores, retail sales reflected record-high numbers during the 2019 holiday season thanks to online shopping, Mastercard reported. Total retail numbers reached close to $880 billion, up 3.4 percent from Nov. 1 and Dec. 24 compared to the same period in 2018. Read more at PYMNTS.

High inventory levels, declining demand and lower prices resulted in worldwide semiconductor revenue falling 12.8 per cent to $409 billion in 2019. However, sales growth is expected to return in 2020 with revenue increasing almost 6 percent to $433 billion in 2020, according to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics. ECIA’s President and CEO Bill Bradford announced to the Board of Directors that he plans to step down as the association president and chief executive officer by the end of Q1 2020. Bradford has led the association since 2018 and will transition to an industry position later in the year. Read more at ECIA.

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Ray Hall Spirit of ERA Award. This prestigious award was established in 2004 to honor ERA’s CEO of 40+ years, Ray Hall, and it is intended to recognize individual ERA members, past or present, who exemplify the spirit of ERA in advancing the professional field sales function within or beyond a company, territory, marketplace, the electronics industry, ERA and/or its affiliated organizations. The Electronics Representatives Association (ERA) mourns the loss of Julie Baker of Fairport, N.Y. Baker passed away on Jan. 3, 2020. She was 58. Baker was account manager for GMA located in Pittsford, N.Y., and served as the secretary/treasurer of the Empire State Chapter of ERA. She was predeceased by her husband Richard “Dick” Baker and is survived by daughters Claire (John Dakin), Jill and Paige; stepson Geoff; parents Joanne and Richard “Dick” Clas; brothers Dick (Marie), Dan, Jim (Pam), Dave (Julie), Terry (Kathy), Andrew; closest friend Terry Jeanne Clas (Vic Del Pozzo); and many nieces and nephews. The Empire State Chapter is planning to make a donation in her honor and dedicate a chapter event in her name.
