Monthly POS Reports
Budde Marketing, which provides monthly POS Index reports to ERA members, issued its latest summary, running from January 2018 through May 2020. Visit era.org to view the new index. According to the new report, May was the lowest POS number in the last three years — 14 percent below January 2018, 16 percent below May 2019, and 2 percent below April 2020. “Semiconductor equipment manufacturers have largely remained silent as the U.S. and China escalate a technology cold war that could disrupt the IC chip market and further decouple the nations’ economies,” EPS News reported. A Reuters survey revealed the economy shrunk by nearly 34 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2020. While economists predicted it would rebound with a 17.8 percent growth in the third quarter and rise another 6.5 percent from October through December, that’s weaker than the 18.5 percent and 8 percent respective growth predictions made a month ago, the survey said. The second quarter of 2020 ended well for the traditional PC market (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) with global shipments growing 11.2 percent year over year reaching a total of 72.3 million units, according to IDC. “The strong demand driven by work-from-home as well as e-learning needs has surpassed previous expectations and has once again put the PC at the center of consumers’ tech portfolio,” said Jitesh Ubrani research manager for IDC’s Mobile Device Trackers. Global IT spending is expected to decline by 7.3 percent in 2020, according to new figures from Gartner. Spending in the segment is still projected to reach $3.5 trillion for the year, despite current cash flow restrictions. Read more at ChannelLife.
