Manufacturing Data Reports

Manufacturing data reports from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) are released on or about the first of every month and can be accessed at ISM. The Nov. 1 report says economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in October, and the overall economy grew for the 126th consecutive month. Also, of the 18 manufacturing industries included in the report, the computer and electronic products sector was one of five reporting growth in October.


Global sales of semiconductors reached $106.7 billion for the third quarter of 2019, down by 14.6 percent over the third quarter of 2018. Sales for September were $35.6 billion, down by 14.6 percent over a year ago. However, industry officials expressed some hope that both September and the third quarter were higher than the previous periods in 2019. Read more at eBom.

Worldwide end-user spending on wearable devices will total $52 billion in 2020 — an increase of 27 percent from 2019 — according to the latest forecast from Gartner Inc. In 2019, worldwide wearable devices end-user spending is on pace to reach $41 billion. Read more at Gartner.

Global smartphone shipments grew 2 percent annually to reach 366 million units in the third quarter of 2019, according to Strategy Analytics. This is the smartphone industry’s first period of positive growth for two years. Read more at LightReading.

Almost 90 percent of U.S. electronics manufacturers state that they are troubled by the increased tariffs imposed by the U.S. and China on each other’s imports, Evertiq reported. More than a third of companies say that they cannot increase their prices to cover the cost of higher import tariffs, due to various factors Read more at Evertiq.

According to Janice Sutherland, women’s leadership expert, mature workers are a tremendous help in the workplace, and engaging them requires a culture that embraces all generations. Organizations can tap into older employees’ skills and knowledge by creating ways for them to mentor younger team members and giving them new challenges, Sutherland writes. ZEUS Battery Products announced a new partnership with Kruvand Associates Inc. The collaboration started in January 2019 to cover the Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona and all of Mexico. The collaboration between Kruvand and ZEUS will include ZEUS’ power product portfolio for alkaline, sealed lead acid, lithium iron phosphate, lithium polymer and ion, nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium, lithium thionyl chloride and chargers.
