ERA Announces the Recipients of the 2026 Mark Motsinger White Pin Internships

ERA announces six internships for the summer of 2026

The ERA White Pin group is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Mark Motsinger White Pin Internships:

  • Maya Gabbi, Chapman University — Ion Associates (Texas)
  • Olivia Burchstead, University of Kansas — Cover 2 Sales (Maryland)
  • Taedra Tsecaris, University of Connecticut — John E. Boeing Co. (New Hampshire)
  • Mary Coakley, University of Massachusetts at Amherst — Coakley Boyd & Abbett (Massachusetts)
  • Erik Timbo, University of St. Thomas — Cain-Forlaw Co. (Illinois)
  • Gabrielle Tully, Milwaukee School of Engineering — Brainard-Nielsen Marketing (Illinois)

This is the fifth year that the ERA White Pin Group and ERA National have partnered to award internships to manufacturers’ representative firms in various regions of North America to help hire and onboard college students as interns during the summer or academic year.

“We are excited to welcome this cohort of summer 2026 interns and congratulate the rep firm recipients,” said Kingsland Coombs, CPMR, CSP, senior vice president at large for the ERA Executive Committee and chair of the White Pin Group. “These interns will bring a wealth of new ideas and raw potential that will spark innovation within our rep firms. I look forward to seeing the growth and valuable insights that will come from this collaboration.”

“We are thrilled to be awarding six internships for the summer of 2026,” stated Lori Bruno, CPMR, senior vice president of education for the ERA Executive Committee. “It’s rewarding to see our mission of advocating for the manufacturers’ representative role and cultivating young talent come to life. We look forward to building on this momentum and becoming even stronger!”

ERA launched the Mark Motsinger White Pin Internship program in 2022 as a way to help the rep community introduce the rep model to college students and attract, hire and retain young people to keep the electronics industry fresh and relevant. The program allows rising college juniors or seniors to work for a manufacturers’ representative firm over the summer months to gain a better understanding and hands-on experience of the electronic components industry.

The internship program was named after Mark Motsinger, president of Wallace Electronic Sales, who served as executive director of the ERA White Pin group for more than 16 years. Motsinger helped to define the educational role of the White Pin group and helped promote the hiring and onboarding of new college graduates into our industry.

Please join ERA in congratulating all the rep companies and interns!

> Scaling up at ERA

Ed Smith, CEO of ERA

I would like to thank you all in advance for attending the annual 2026 ERA Conference, and for Conference Chair Perry Thornton and Conference Vice Chair Julie Carr and all the committee members who have worked many hours to make this an industry-leading event.

We will have more than 650 attendees and a new home at the Hilton Austin in downtown Austin. This is a record crowd, and this shows that people find value in the three days in Austin. Our goal is to have speakers and breakout sessions that help and guide you in your day-today duties. I appreciate the support of all our sponsors which enables us to have a world-class event in a world-class venue. This was my first year putting this event together and I was impressed by the ERA staff of Kate, Karin, Clare, Ama, Natalie and Susan and the work they do to organize this great event.

The main stage will have fantastic speakers talking about reaching the unreachable and about human connection in a digital world. They will speak about the fast pace of a supply chain in the new world politics (just keeping up with the tariffs last year was dizzying). We will have someone speak about how to collaborate when we live in a world where AI is being used to a greater degree. I could not be more excited to see how the main stage inspires and motivates Conference attendees.

The breakout sessions will dig deeper into topics of importance to reps, manufacturers and distributors and will be geared towards tactical and practical actions and takeaways. AI will be featured in multiple sessions, which will highlight some available tools and how to use them in practical applications. We will have sessions on relationships and some deeper discussions on communication. We will have some conversations about CMMC and how to comply with the flow downs. We will have a market trend update that will feature new data on lead times and sales, and I will also give an ERA update.

There are many other things that ERA is working on that will be rolled out later this year. We are working to provide our members a new data resource that reports all parts shipped in Mexico, Canada and the U.S. sorted by HTS code. We are also working on some data about the value of rep firms with real-life examples and numbers to support our position.

We are busy at ERA, but never too busy to help support local chapter efforts and events. If you need our help, just reach out to me or one of the ERA staff. I have attended quite a few chapter events and have been impressed with the enthusiasm and work put into each of the events. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Announcing 2026 ERA Conference General Session Speakers James Taylor and Michael Knight

The 2026 ERA Conference Committee is pleased to announce that James Taylor and Michael Knight will present as general session speakers on the second day of the annual ERA Conference in February in Austin, Texas.

James Taylor

James Taylor, MBA, FRSA, who started his career managing high profile rock stars, is now an in-demand keynote speaker and internationally recognized leader in creativity, innovation and artificial intelligence. For more than 20 years, he has been advising CEOs, entrepreneurs, educators, governments, leaders, writers and rockstars on how to design innovative organizations, unlock creative potential and build a sustainable future. He has authored a new book: “SuperCreativity: Augmenting Human Creativity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”

Taylor will present the first general session on Tuesday, Feb. 24, entitled “Supercollaboration: Cyborgs, Centaurs and The Rise of Human-AI Collaboration.”

Today’s business landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by exponential technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital twins and robotics. They are transforming industries ranging from electronics, retail and healthcare to engineering, construction and defense. Taylor will guide Conference attendees through a captivating exploration of how leaders and organizations are adapting to technological change. Learn how, in this new world, our most valuable competitive advantage as a leader lies in our ability to foster creative collaboration between humans and machines. This tailored and entertaining presentation is designed to inspire and equip attendees with insights and strategies needed to be future-ready.

Learn more about this session in this video.

Michael Knight

Michael Knight, an electronics industry favorite, has been in the electronics industry for more than 30 years, working for several electronic private and public component manufacturers and distributors. At TTI, Inc., his roles have included VP of Product and Marketing, President of the Exponential Technology Group and currently, Corporate Senior Vice President of Strategy. Knight also has a long history of service and leadership on the boards of directors of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and is a frequent guest on a wide range of podcasts, and regular keynote speaker at many industry conferences.

Knight will close out the Conference with the final general session on Tuesday, Feb. 24 — “Great Disruption is the Mother of Great Opportunity.” Technology is relentlessly accelerating the pace of invention and innovation, both causing and addressing the disruptions that have become abundant in our business. There are a lot of signs that we are now squarely on the exponential part of the exponential curve and that big, new-to-the-world businesses are being built from the technology supply chain for which we are a part. Knight will offer attendees a look at various “gigatrends” through a series of what-if questions intended to spotlight the ever-growing opportunities for our industry.

The 2026 ERA Keynote and General Sessions Conference Committee is thrilled to have Taylor and Knight as general session speakers on the second day of the conference, as they are sure to present unique insights and knowledge to Conference-goers.

> Announcing 2026 ERA Conference General Session Speakers Jacob Shapiro and Eddie Smith

ERA PRESS RELEASE
December 4, 2025
Contact: Clare Kluck / Communications Director / ckluck@era.org

The 2026 ERA Conference Committee is pleased to announce that Jacob Shapiro and Ed Smith will present as general session speakers at the annual ERA Conference on Feb. 22-24, 2026, in Austin, Texas.

Jacob Shapiro is a geopolitical analyst and Director of Research at The Bespoke Group, a wealth strategy firm. Shapiro is a prolific public speaker, delivering frequent keynotes and briefings across industries like finance, agriculture and energy, to name a few. He hosts “The Jacob Shapiro” podcast, which features interviews with subject matter experts in geopolitics, technology, markets and other fields.

Jacob Shapiro

Shapiro will present the first general session on Monday, Feb. 23 entitled, “Geopolitics, Supply Chains and the New Electronics Landscape.” The world is shifting from a U.S.-led unipolar order to a multipolar, highly transactional system, and the electronics industry sits squarely in the crosshairs. In this new landscape, success depends less on efficiency and more on resilient partnerships, flexible planning and strategic urgency. Global power is realigning and while this comes with risks, it also creates opportunities for manufacturers and distributors to stay ahead.

Key takeaways from the presentation will include:

• Why North America—especially Mexico under USMCA—is emerging as the most trusted, adaptable foundation for future electronics supply chains.
• Why exposure to China (and in some cases India) now carries structural risk that companies can no longer ignore.
• Reconceptualizing trust as infrastructure—and adaptability as strategy—to build more resilient sourcing, customer relationships and operational plans.

Eddie Smith

ERA Announces New CEO Edward Smith

The Electronics Representatives Association (ERA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Edward Smith as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 2, 2025. This appointment follows the retirement of Walter Tobin, who will continue to support the association in a part-time consulting capacity.

“I am thrilled that Ed Smith will take over the CEO leadership role at ERA,” said Tobin. “As CEO for the past ten years, I have been blessed to have had the support of a great team at ERA National and the support of both the ERA Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. However, it has been the tremendous response and support of our more than 750 members, reps, manufacturers and distributors that has given me so much joy in this great capstone to my career. I will be working with Ed over the next several months to allow for an orderly transition and will help Ed and ERA in any way I can. Ed will bring his energy and great industry experience to ERA. Prepare to be amazed!”

“Walter leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service and impact. His leadership has fundamentally transformed ERA, and we are profoundly grateful for his dedication,” said Tom Griffin, CPMR, president of the ERA Executive Committee. “As we look to the future, we are thrilled to welcome Ed Smith. His reputation, experience and vision will ensure that ERA continues to thrive as the voice of our industry. Ed will focus on expanding ERA’s influence, delivering greater value to members and ensuring that the association remains a forward-looking advocate for the electronics industry.”

Smith is a seasoned and successful executive with more than 35 years of experience in the electronic manufacturing services (EMS) industry and the electronic components distribution industry. He served as CEO at Smtek International and then held several senior executive positions at Avnet for many years, including president for seven years. He then joined SMTC Corporation as CEO in 2017 and was later promoted to chairman. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Data I/O and other private Boards. He holds a degree from Queensborough Community College – CUNY and continued his education at St. John’s University.

“I am extremely excited to follow Walter Tobin at ERA and continue to drive the programs that have been created, as well as create new value-added programs,” said Smith. “The industry continues to change and we at ERA need to continue to provide value to our members both nationally and in working with the local chapters, OEMs and distributor partners, and that is exciting to me. This opportunity allows me to give back to the industry that has given me so much. I look forward to a bright future.”

ERA will host a special ERA LIVE session on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4:00 p.m. ET where ERA will introduce Ed Smith to the membership and attendees can learn more about Ed’s background and ask him questions. Save the date for this virtual session and we hope to see you there.

> ERA enters a new era

Ed Smith, CEO of ERA

It has been a whirlwind 45 days. When you replace the GOAT, the expectations are high and people are waiting for what will happen next.

It couldn’t be a more exciting time at ERA. As the Conference continues to get bigger and more useful every year, I would like to thank the committees who do a lot of the hard work to give the Conference vision and help decide the direction of speakers and subjects. The world is being inundated with AI, and so that seems like a natural session.

When I think of AI I try to think, how does it make our sales process more effective? Because any new tool or software is cool but if it doesn’t make us more efficient or allow us more time to sell, the question is…why do it? The economist part of the Conference is always a good overview on how we fit into the bigger financial picture, and what might be affecting the people we deal with daily. I look forward to announcing other general sessions in the near future. Once again, thank you to all the committee members who volunteer time and resources.

I have had the pleasure of attending about five local ERA chapter events and have been impressed at how professional they are and how much charitable work we do in our local communities. This is near and dear to me personally as I live my life on the credo that we should give more than we take from this life, and that is what true success looks like. The less fortunate can always use a helping hand and we are in a great position to give it to them.

I also believe that the local chapters are a differentiator in the electronics association space, as we can speak about things that affect people in a particular geography and not waste time talking about problems in a different geography. It also allows us to help people in a local market. I can’t wait until the next chapter event and look forward to meeting more members and hearing what is on their mind.

The last thing I would like to speak about is a member survey that ERA is sending out via email — we would like members’ input and help with setting the direction of the association in the future. This will be a very easy survey to fill out and I would ask that all of you please fill it out and let your voice be heard. I know surveys are a pain, but I will not do this very often and would appreciate you responding. I will be asking about many of ERA’s existing tools and how are they helping (or are they not helping?) I will be asking what you find valuable and what you do not. I will slip in a Net Promoter Score question to see how we are doing as your association.

Thank you for choosing me to lead ERA into the future. I would be remiss not to thank Walter for all of his help in the transition and thank him for all he has done and will do.

> Celebrating a legacy of success

John O’Brien ERA Chairman of the Board

I’ve been fortunate enough over the past 10 years to work side by side with Walter Tobin on the ERA Executive Committee. Since joining ERA, Walter’s passion and focus have been the driving force behind the resurgence of this association. We all owe Walter a debt of gratitude. In 10 years, ERA has gained relevance in the industry, with our cornerstone event being the national Conference.

Membership is up in all categories and our finances are strong.

Prior to his time at ERA, I was also fortunate to spend the first 20 years of my career working with Walter at Future Electronics. Coming from my perspective as a rep, Walter has always supported manufacturers’ reps. Walter was integral in setting up the first rep council at Future and has since dedicated a lot of time to assisting other distributors in setting up rep councils. His passion goes way beyond his work.

His passion for his family is legendary. Janice, his daughters and all of their many grandkids are his guiding light. We love hearing about his yearly pilgrimages to Aruba, and spending summers at the “Summer White House” in Cape Cod where they all convene and spend time together as a family.

On a personal note, I am honored to call Walter a friend. He’s helped me personally develop in my career by providing perspectives I may not have considered. I’ve traveled quite a bit with Walter. My proudest day was the day we were getting on a plane and he had his boarding pass on his phone, not printed. He still checked his phone 11 times on the gangway to make sure his seat hadn’t changed. My wife and I had the pleasure of attending the Boston Pops Christmas Concert with Walter and Janice. It was an amazing night filled with music, cocktails and the pleasure of seeing firsthand the love and admiration between Walter and Janice.

Thank you for everything, Walter!
